I know what it’s like to run a large nonprofit organization in a challenging environment. As the President of Handgun Control, Inc. and the Center to Prevent Handgun Violence, I faced all the challenges that confront a nonprofit CEO. I had to raise money, balance competing interests, manage and motivate a large staff, work with the boards of directors, while also pushing an aggressive legislative and program agenda. It wasn’t easy, but it was worth it. And, in the end, the organization was stronger, more vibrant, and more successful. Since then, I have been the CEO of two other nonprofit organizations. But before I was a CEO, I worked for nearly twenty years in the Washington public policy arena, as a senior Congressional aide to leading members of Congress, legislative counsel to one of the most powerful lobbies in Congress, and chief lobbyist for one of the most successful nonprofit lobbies in Washington.
